Staff Q&A: Lazaros Fotopoulos | Gym Instructor

As part of our Health and Fitness team, Lazaros Fotopoulos shares what it is like delivering Couch to 5K sessions at the YMCA Youth and Community Centre in Aspley.

The Couch to 5k programme is a series of running sessions that trains people from the couch to running 5 kilometres (or 30 minutes) in usually around just 12 weeks. Nottinghamshire YMCA’s sessions are funded by the GOGA project, ‘Get Out Go Active‘. Below, Lazaros Fotopoulos shares an insight into his world of fitness, both in and out of work. Find out what inspires, tempts and makes Lazaros tick!

What’s the most inspiring part of your job?

The most inspiring and motivating part is at the end of a class delivery when participants stay behind to say that they did enjoy the activity, the programme or a particular exercise and I can see the appreciation and happiness in their face! That’s brilliant, it gives me so much courage!

What cool thing are you currently working on?

At the moment most of my time at the YMCA goes into the Couch to 5K delivery. I have experience from running similar courses in the past but this one.. is much more popular! I am super happy inspiring and motivating that many people to take up running!

One thing you can’t resist?

Food. Give me food and take my soul!

What are you happiest doing, when you’re not working?

Calisthenics, which is a form of workout-exercise, you basically train by using your own body-weight.
