Current Volunteer Refugee Worker Opportunities

If you are interested in becoming a Volunteer Refugee Worker please email emma.okenyi@nottsymca.org

As a Volunteer Refugee Worker, you could offer valuable support and advice to refugees living at the YMCA hostel. You might help by:

  • Assisting  refugees to access  housing and healthcare
  • Showing refugees where to find local amenities
  • Signposting/referring refugees to other support agencies
  • Interpreting/translating documents
  • Organising activities e.g. sports, conversation classes, etc for the refugee residents at the hostel

Skills & Training

  • Language skills are only necessary for interpreting and translating (see below)
  • Need to have good interpersonal skills
  • Need to be sympathetic to people of different backgrounds, ages and physical and psychological needs

Training and support for this role will be provided.

How Much Time Do I Need To Give Up?

You and the Lead Refugee Worker will discuss how much time you are able to give.

Will Volunteering Cost Me Anything?

The YMCA will reimburse all reasonable travel expenses. Volunteers are asked to keep expenses to a minimum and to supply receipts.

Interpreting & Translating

We currently have residents who speak the following languages:

  • Tigrinya
  • Amharic
  • Farsi
  • Kurdish
  • Arabic
  • French
  • Portuguese
