In April 2006 we launched our Sponsor a Child scheme in partnership with Zambia YMCA. Children in this region face a daily struggle due to chronic poverty and the AIDS pandemic. Many are classed as double orphans having lost both their parents as a result of AIDS or other serious illness. We want to help children in this region have a future and not only help provide food and clothing for them but to assist with their education - helping to change their lives and give them hope for the future.

21 orphans are now sponsored through the scheme.  20 more are on a waiting list. Click here for more details about Sponsoring a Child (pdf download) or contact International Projects, Nottinghamshire YMCA, All Saints NDC Wellbeing Centre, 75 Raleigh St, Nottingham NG7 4DL.  Tel: (0115) 855 3362.

We are also fundraising for sports kit for Peer Educators in Chibombo, and supporting the start of a micro-finance scheme in partnership with Zambia YMCA to help the local community in Chibombo become self-sustaining.

Malawi
Nottinghamshire YMCA has supported the introduction of a YMCA to Malawi. Currently based in Chikwawa (Southern Malawi) and Blantyre, Malawi YMCA is certainly active in engaging young people, providing activities for them and in improving lives in their communities.

Activities include football leagues, the Avoid AIDS band visiting five schools and villages in Chikwawa, drama groups, advocating children's and women's rights and encouraging children to attend school.  With the arrival of electricity in Chikwawa in 2008, they hope to start a DVD-showing room, to raise funds for YMCA activities.

Zimbabwe
A team from Nottinghamshire YMCA travelled to Bulawayo, Zimbabwe, to implement a sports delivery programme in the area. The aim of the project was to encourage young people in the area to make an active contribution to their community. Since our visit over 350 children have taken part in football tournaments at Mpopoma High School and eleven football teams are being run in the area by volunteer coaches. We are continuing to work in partnership with Baden YMCA in Germany to support programme development in Zimbabwe. bulawayo_sport_spectators07
USA
We have recently developed links with like-minded YMCAs in the United States who are committed to a best practice culture, enabling us to promote efficient working practices to maximise the potential of our programmes across Nottinghamshire.
